Part 2 of a 3 part series on change.
When we decide to make a change in our lives, the excitement of a fresh start often fuels big, ambitious goals. Whether it’s starting a meditation practice, losing weight, or creating a healthier routine, we set our sights high. But too often, those lofty goals become overwhelming, leading to frustration, burnout, and a feeling of low self esteem for another failed attempt at trying to create change.
The truth is, lasting change doesn’t come from massive leaps — it comes from small, consistent steps.
Why Big Goals Can Lead to Burnout
Think about starting a meditation practice. Many people aim for 30 minutes a day right off the bat, but that’s a big commitment for someone new to meditation. Sitting still for half an hour can feel daunting, and the result is often skipping the practice altogether.
Similarly, setting a goal to lose 50 pounds can feel overwhelming. Every small slip feels like a failure, and progress seems so slow that it’s easy to give up.
Big goals require significant effort, time, and willpower all at once. And when life gets busy or challenging, it’s those big commitments that tend to fall by the wayside.
The Power of Small Wins
Starting small is not about shrinking your ambition — it’s about building momentum and confidence. When you focus on manageable actions, you find it more doable to accomplish your tasks which helps with self confidence and you create habits that stick. For example:
Instead of aiming for 30 minutes of meditation, start with just 5 minutes. Even on a busy day, 5 minutes is doable. Over time, you’ll find yourself naturally extending the practice because it feels good, not because you should.
Rather than focusing on losing 50 pounds, aim for 5 pounds at a time. Losing 5 pounds is not nearly as mentally overwhelming as losing 50 pounds. Celebrate each milestone, knowing that every small victory brings you closer to your ultimate goal.
These smaller goals are easier to achieve, and each success builds your confidence and motivation to keep going.
Why It Works
Starting small works because it:
Builds habits gradually: By starting with something manageable, you ease into the routine, allowing your mind and body to adapt.
Reduces overwhelm: When your goals feel achievable, you’re more likely to stick with them.
Boosts confidence: Success breeds success. Accomplishing small goals creates a positive feedback loop that keeps you moving forward.
Lasting Change is a Journey
The journey to lasting change doesn’t require dramatic overhauls — it requires consistent, intentional steps. By starting small, you set yourself up for success, creating habits that become a natural part of your life over time.
So, take that first step. Spend just 5 minutes meditating. Focus on one healthy habit at a time. Celebrate the small wins. And watch as those little changes add up to something truly transformative.
Remember: small steps today lead to big changes tomorrow.
Suggestion for moving forward: Write down one change you would like to make and why you want to make it. What micro steps could you implement to help you achieve your overall goal?
